On Friday, the Wall Street Journal wandered into the fray of the Trump whistleblower flap, backing up unconfirmed reports that what set off the hubbub was a July phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Journal reported that Trump "repeatedly" asked Zelensky to work with attorney Rudy Giuliani on digging up dirt about Biden (the paper says Trump brought it up "about eight times" during the call). Now Biden is weighing in, calling for Trump to make the call public so everyone can hear for themselves what was discussed. "If these reports are true, then there is truly no bottom to President Trump's willingness to abuse his power and abase our country," Biden says in a statement, per Politico. "Such clear-cut corruption damages and diminishes our institutions of government by making them tools of a personal political vendetta."
Biden continues that such behavior is "particularly abhorrent because it exploits the foreign policy of our country and undermines our national security for political purposes." He asks Trump to "at minimum ... immediately release the transcript of the call in question, so that the American people can judge for themselves." He also wants Joseph Maguire, the acting director of national intelligence, to release the whistleblower complaint to Congress, which so far Maguire has refused to do. Meanwhile, Fox News reports that Trump is still set to meet with Zelensky next week at the United Nations, first at a General Assembly meeting with other world leaders on Tuesday, then paired off together on Wednesday, the White House has confirmed.
