It is possible for baby squirrels' tails to get stuck together in the wild, typically due to sap leaking on them or their mother not cleaning them well enough. But in the case of four 6-week-old squirrels who were found on train tracks in Connecticut with their tails braided together last week, veterinarians at the Kensington Bird & Animal Hospital suspect animal cruelty. The tails were braided together in pairs, then those two knots were additionally braided together, CNN reports. Plus, the braids were symmetrical—and clean.
"The tails were broken and braided together as well as tied together by a human made object," says the animal hospital on Facebook. "Unfortunately their tails are broken and may need to be amputated"; one has already had its tail amputated. All of them are now recovering, and eating well. As for what's next, "squirrels revert back to the wild easily," says a veterinarian who treated them. "The big factor is how well they can function without the tail."
