A suspect is in custody, but one or more others are believed to have fled, after a fatal shooting that appeared to target a German synagogue on Judaism's holiest day. Gunmen tried to enter the synagogue in the east-central city of Halle, where 70 to 80 worshipers had gathered for Yom Kippur, around midday Wednesday but were blocked by security, the Guardian reports, citing the head of the the local Jewish community. The terror didn't end there, however. Unconfirmed witness reports describe a gunman dressed like a police officer shooting a female outside the synagogue, before throwing a hand grenade toward the cemetery. Witnesses also said a gunman wearing military gear shot and killed a male inside a Turkish kebab shop after throwing a stun grenade that ricocheted off the door frame.
"He threw something like a grenade, it didn't explode, and he opened fire with an assault rifle," a witness at the kebab shop says, per the BBC. "The man behind me seems to have died. I hid in the toilet," the person adds, per CNN. Police confirmed two people were killed, while one suspect was arrested, reports Deutsche Welle. Local reports suggest the individual was nabbed after hijacking a taxi, per the Guardian. CNN reports two people were injured in a hijacking 8 or 9 miles away in the town of Queis. The BBC describes a second shooting in that same area while noting that other suspects are believed to have fled Halle in a vehicle. "We remain alert" and "have deployed forces in and around Halle and are trying to stabilize the situation until we have all the relevant information," reads a police tweet cited by the New York Times.
