Off the coast of Texas, a search is underway for a man who looks to have jumped off the balcony outside his room on a Carnival cruise. NBC News reports the US Coast Guard received a call shortly before 9pm Thursday that a Carnival Dream passenger, an unidentified 26-year-old man, had gone into the water near Galveston. Based on video footage, "it appears the guest jumped from his stateroom balcony," a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson says. It was said to have happened a few hours after the ship left Galveston for a four-day cruise, and the ship did a 180 to return to the place where the man went overboard.
Helicopter and other air crew were dispatched to help look for the man, and multiple cargo ships also joined the effort. Another passenger on the Dream told ABC News late Thursday that the waters were rough as the search commenced. "They were calling a name out for quite a while, several times, on the intercom," the passenger noted. "And then they said, 'We have a man overboard.'" Carnival officials say a special team is tending to the man's family; the ship, meanwhile, was cleared to continue on to Cozumel. "We are saddened by this outcome," the cruise line's rep says, per NBC. (More cruise ships stories.)
