Three teenagers who were shot at their California high school Thursday are recovering from their wounds, doctors said. A 14-year-old boy has been released from a hospital, ABC reports. Two girls, 15 and 14, should be released soon, doctors said. The 15-year-old, who was shot below the bellybutton, has a bullet in her hip. The 14-year-old was shot in the shoulder and abdomen. A trauma surgeon said the two students were "stoic" and "held their composure despite being shot." They knew each other, and are sharing a room at the hospital, per the Los Angeles Times. Family members are with the girls, and the surgeon said, "They were both sitting up, smiling and talking.” A 15-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl shot at the Santa Clarita school died at another hospital Thursday.
The victims also working through the “profound psychological effect" of the shootings, per USA Today, which professionals at the hospital were helping with. One survivor said she was in Spanish class when the shooting started. "This is it," she thought. "I’m gonna die.” A woman said her nephew saw his friend shot, then began running, thinking his friend was only grazed. When he was told that his friend died, she said, "He lost it." Another woman said her son sat looking down afterward, crying "silent tears." (Thursday was the shooting suspect's 16th birthday.)
