Georgia police have arrested a 16-year-old girl for allegedly planning to attack and murder people in a mostly black church—with knives, no less, ABC News reports. The girl, who is white and remains unidentified, has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder. Her alleged target: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Gainesville. "She had written down how she wanted to do it, the best way to do it," Police Chief Jay Parrish tells the Gainesville Times. "She had procured some butcher knives, kitchen knives, to do the attack with and had actually scouted out the location." Seems students discovered the plan in the girl's notebook and told officials at Gainesville High School, who confirmed the threat and informed police.
Parrish says the girl is a racist who craved notoriety. "It hurts me that someone can have that much hate in their body," he adds. "It hurts me that in almost 2020 we still have that belief running around. So, I'll say that I'm highly alarmed that someone would feel that way and would take these significant steps to attack a innocent person, a godly person, at a church—one of the most sacred things our society has left—that they would plan that as a place of attack and base it solely on skin color. That just hurts my heart." He calls the case "a prime example" of how good relationships between students, school officials, and law enforcement "can intercept a potentially horrific incident," per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The girl is being held in a Gainesville youth detention center. (More racism stories.)
