President Trump's son-in-law, whose previous assignments in the Trump administration have included overseeing the Middle East peace process, reforming the criminal justice system, solving the nation's opioid crisis, and overhauling federal bureaucracy, has got a new mission, insiders say. Sources tell the Washington Post that Jared Kushner is now the "de facto project manager" for the border wall and has been holding regular meetings with government officials, where he conveys Trump's wishes and asks for progress reports. The insiders say Kushner is trying to speed up the process of seizing private land for the project and has made it clear that the president wants at least 400 miles built by Election Day next year.
Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan tells the Post that Kushner has been able to bring people together and expedite decisions. "He doesn't need to know the intricacies of the wall," Morgan says. "He understands building stuff. He understands timelines." Some of the Post's sources, however, say the 38-year-old Kushner has annoyed some officials by displaying a lack of knowledge about policy details and the land procurement process. The Hill reports that amid struggles with Congress over funding for the project, only around 83 miles of border wall have been completed so far, and almost all of it is classified as "replacement wall." (Trump says the problem of people sawing holes in the border wall can be "easily fixed.")
