Lawyer: Dulos Attempted Suicide After 'Devastating News'

Connecticut murder suspect Fotis Dulos is in critical condition after an apparent suicide attempt came extremely close to succeeding. Police say the 52-year-old is being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after officers who conducted a welfare check Tuesday found him unresponsive in the garage of his Farmington home, the AP reports. Sources tell the Hartford Courant that first responders initially believed Dulos had died and family members were informed. But after about 30 minutes, a faint pulse was detected while Dulos was being taken to a hospital. The Courant's sources say Dulos is now on life support at the Jacobi Medical Center in New York City, which has a hyperbaric chamber to treat victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dulos, who is accused of murdering estranged wife Jennifer Farber Dulos last year, had been due in court for a bail hearing Tuesday. Attorney Norm Pattis—who was among those initially informed that Dulos had died—tells NBC Connecticut that Dulos had been dealing with the "devastating news" that he might have his $6 million bond revoked due to problems with the collateral, meaning he could be sent back to jail to face trial. Some people will "obviously take some grim satisfaction in today’s events but my message to each and every one of them is shame on you," the lawyer says. The Courant reports that a bail hearing will be held Wednesday without Dulos present. New York City bondsman Ira Judelson, whose high-profile clients include Harvey Weinstein, says he has agreed to take over the bond. (Last week, a judge rebuked Dulos for interfering with a memorial to his wife.)
