A baby in China was born with coronavirus—the first case so far of suspected mother-to-child transmission, the New York Daily News reports. State media says the newborn's mother tested positive for the pneumonia-like virus before having the baby in Wuhan, which is ground zero for the outbreak. Chinese officials say the coronavirus has sickened over 24,000 and killed almost 500 in China, where authorities have locked down multiple cities. Over 20 other countries have reported cases, but there are only two fatalities off China's mainland: one in the Philippines and one in Hong Kong. In related news:

  • The case is mostly affected adults in China, but children might be getting a lighter form of the illness. "My strong, educated guess is that younger people are getting infected, but they get the relatively milder disease," a Hong Kong doctor tells the New York Times. Scientists say children may be getting the infection without showing outward symptoms.
  • The past 24 hours have seen the highest rise yet of coronavirus in China, with officials reporting 3,887 cases and 65 fatalities, per the Hill. The World Health Organization says there are 191 cases across 24 countries; all are either close to someone in Wuhan or another confirmed case.
  • A Wisconsin patient on Wednesday marks the 12th coronavirus case in America since the first was recorded on January 24, Business Insider reports. State health officials say the patient had "a history of travel to Beijing" and add that the risk of contracting the virus in Wisconsin "is very low."
  • A Canadian forced a passenger plane to fly back to Toronto by standing up with a camera and claiming he didn't "feel too well" after his return from Hunan province. "Well, it was really just to create a viral video," the man, James Potok, told the CBC. Potok, who wasn't really ill, was charged with mischief and breach of recognizance.
