Biden Campaign Gets an Endorsement It Doesn't Want

Ousted FBI Director James Comey, who left the Republican party in 2018 over President Trump, voted for Joe Biden on Super Tuesday—but the former VP's campaign apparently wasn't too jazzed by Comey's endorsement:

  • Comey: "Voted in first Dem primary to support party dedicated to restoring values in WH," he tweeted. "I agree with @amyklobuchar: We need candidate who cares about all Americans and will restore decency, dignity to the office. There is a reason Trump fears @joebiden and roots for Bernie. #Biden2020" (Comey had previously donated to Amy Klobuchar's campaign.)

  • Biden's campaign: "Yes, customer service? I just received a package that I very much did not order. How can I return it, free of charge?" That was the tweeted reply from Andrew Bates, director of rapid response for Biden’s campaign, per the Hill.
  • Scratch that: Bates ultimately clarified after getting some pushback on his tweet: "I forgot the #1 rule of politics, which is that if you talk about anyone or anything related to 2016, common sense goes out the window. It was meant to be a lighthearted joke - not a rejection. We appreciate the vote of anyone repelled by Donald Trump."
As Fox News explains, Bates was likely referring to Comey's controversial announcement, days before the 2016 presidential election, that the FBI was reopening its probe of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. (More Election 2020 stories.)
