Summer's Best Craft Beers
Sip Alaska's icy best this summer.   (Alaskan Brewing)

Sick of the bland beer everyone else is drinking? As summer officially kicks off, William Brand pours a frosty glass of small-but-mighty suds suggestions in the San Jose Mercury News:

  • Alaskan Summer Ale (Alaskan Brewing): This gold-medal-winning Juneau native makes an excellent thirst-quencher, in the Kolsch style you might've savored in Cologne.

  • Zatec Bright Lager (Zatecky Pivovar): Zatec is essentially a pilsner, but in the Czech Republic, a beer's only a pilsner if it's made in Pilsen, where the recipe was invented. Still, what with its brewer's 400-year craft tradition, Zatec is one of the best “bright lagers” around.
  • Maui Coconut Porter (Maui Brewing Co.): Unavailable outside Hawaii until just this month, the smooth blend of coconut and a lighter beer style makes for a mellow summer drink.
