A Japanese researcher is generating headlines for his odd invention—a TV that allows you to lick the screen and taste different flavors. The device, called Taste the TV (TTTV) is yet "another step towards creating a multi-sensory viewing experience," reports Reuters. It makes use of built-in canisters that spray flavoring onto a film on the screen. Once licked, the film can be tossed and a new one rolled into place. You can see it in action in videos here and here. "The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home," inventor Homei Miyashita of Meiji University tells Reuters. He and his team have made a prototype and think it could be mass produced for about $875.

Miyashita says it's perfect for an age of social distancing. Possible applications, once perfected, include tasting items from an online menu before ordering or even training chefs or sommeliers from a distance. "Personally, I want to use it to taste things from movies or all those food TV shows I watch," writes Mitchell Clark at the Verge. "Would it be a gimmick like 3D movies at home or curved TVs? Almost certainly, but come on, who among us hasn’t wished we could lick our screens while watching internet cooking videos?" For the record, the BBC already has coined the term "Netlicks."
