The House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol is getting what it wants: Sources told outlets including CNN and NBC News that Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, had reached an agreement with the select committee and would sit down for an interview sometime in the coming weeks, and her lawyer later confirmed the news. Thomas is accused of involvement in the "fake electors" scheme, with emails showing she pressured legislators in two states to replace their electors in order to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
The panel had engaged in what NBC describes as "weeks of back and forth" with Thomas, including a letter officially requesting her appearance, and in June, her attorney said there was not a "sufficient basis" for the committee to interview her. He asked for further "justification" as to how her testimony would be "relevant to the committee's legislative purpose." In a statement following news of the deal breaking, however, that attorney said, "As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas is eager to answer the Committee's questions to clear up any misconceptions about her work relating to the 2020 election.
