One teen is dead and two others seriously hurt after an apparent high-speed joyride in Florida over the weekend. Gray News reports that deputies were responding to a call about a vehicle burglary in progress in St. Petersburg on Sunday around 3:20am, with the assistance of a flight unit, and that one suspect was taken into custody at the scene, per a release from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Three other individuals, later identified as two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old, were seen trying to break into other vehicles, including an unlocked silver 2016 Maserati, which one of the suspects opened using his T-shirt, the release notes.

The keys were inside the Maserati, and all three boys climbed in and started heading eastbound without the headlights on, per the release, which adds that deputies on the ground tried to stop the vehicle. Authorities say the Maserati then sped away, reaching speeds of 80mph, until the driver lost control of the car, hit a curb, and slammed into a business sign, causing the vehicle to flip. Deputies didn't pursue the car, per police policy.

At a presser later Sunday, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri noted that one of the 15-year-olds, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, per ABC News. Meanwhile, the driver, also 15, was said to be in critical condition, while the third teen, 16, is said to have life-threatening injuries and isn't expected to survive. "The driver of the car lost control of the car," said Gualtieri, who noted none of them had driver's licenses. "These are young kids; they're inexperienced drivers." He added that the boys had apparently snuck out of their homes after their parents thought they'd gone to bed. An investigation is ongoing. (More car theft stories.)
