Eddie Daniels, mayor of Vienna, Georgia, was on his way to work early Saturday when he saw a black SUV stalled on train tracks. "I seen a lady in trouble, and I knew I had to do what I had to do," Daniels tells WALB. He pulled the female driver out of the front seat, then turned to the back seat and saw three young children there. He pulled a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old out of the car, then went back in for the final child, a 6-year-old. "I was pulling her out and that’s when the train hit," says Daniels, who suffered a broken ankle and required eight stitches on his head due to the impact as well as flying debris.
The incident happened around 3:45am, WGXA reports, and Georgia State Police say the driver, 26-year-old Rodreake Morgan, had alcohol in her system at the time. She's been charged with a DUI, three counts of child endangerment, and failure to maintain lane. "I’m out here just doing God’s work, that’s what we’re supposed to do," Daniels says. "And they told me I was a hero I said I don’t feel like a hero, just feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do, what the people elected me to do." (More Georgia stories.)
