The shooter who killed five people along a walking trail in North Carolina’s capital city is a 15-year-old boy who has been hospitalized in critical condition, police said Friday. Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson told reporters that the suspect opened fire Thursday on a greenway in an area northeast of downtown, per the AP. He then eluded officers for hours before he was cornered in a home and arrested, police said. Authorities did not offer any details on a motive or identify the suspect. The nature of his injuries wasn't specified.

A 16-year-old boy and an off-duty police officer were among those killed. The Raleigh News & Observer identifies the five as Raleigh officer Gabriel Torres, 29; Nicole Conners, 53; Susan Karnatz, 49; Mary Marshall, 34; and James Thompson, 16. Two other people were injured, one of whom (another officer) was treated and released, while the other remains hospitalized. The gunfire broke out around 5pm along the Neuse River Greenway in a residential area northeast of downtown, said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin.

One resident described the neighborhood known as Hedingham as a sprawling, dense, tree-lined community that’s full of single-family homes, duplexes, and townhomes that are more moderately priced compared to other parts of the Raleigh area. Thursday’s violence was the 25th mass killing in 2022 in which the victims were fatally shot, according to the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killings database. A mass killing is defined as when four or more people are killed excluding the perpetrator.
