Cheney: Jan. 6 Panel in Talks Over Trump Testimony

Former President Trump's legal team is "in discussions" with the House select committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, according to Liz Cheney. The congresswoman says the talks center around the former POTUS testifying under oath in the investigation, CNN and ABC News report. Trump's lawyers have not publicly said whether he would comply with his subpoena from the House, but at an Ohio event about the danger of political violence Tuesday, Cheney said Trump is obligated to provide a sworn deposition. "It’ll be done under oath. It’ll be done, potentially, over multiple days," but the format has not yet been finalized, she said.

As CNN notes, this is the first indication that the two sides are in negotiations, and the details—including how cooperative Trump's side is proving to be—are still not clear. Trump's deadline to turn over documents requested by the subpoena is Friday, and the deadline for testimony to begin is Nov. 14. "This is not a situation where the committee is going to put itself at the mercy of Donald Trump in terms of his efforts to create a circus," Cheney said, echoing comments she's made before. Cheney, who last week endorsed a Democrat for the first time, has been speaking out against more of her fellow Republicans in the lead-up to the midterm elections, the New York Times reports. She filmed a commercial urging Arizona Republicans not to vote for GOP nominees Kari Lake and Mark Finchem, and she also said in Ohio that she favors Democrat Tim Ryan over JD Vance.
