'I Never Thought It Would Be Paul,' Pelosi Says

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that the attack on her husband will influence her decision on whether to retire from office if Republicans win control of the House from Democrats in Tuesday's midterm elections. Pelosi made the comment in an interview with CNN scheduled to be shown Monday night, after she was asked if she'd made a decision on her political future. "I have to say my decision will be affected about what happened the last week or two," Pelosi, 82, said, per the Hill. The speaker said in 2018 that this term would be her last, but she's made no announcement.

In the interview, Pelosi told of being awakened at 5am in her Washington home by the doorbell and pounding on her front door. It was Capitol police, who'd come with the news of the violent attack on her husband, Paul, in their San Francisco home. "So I run to the door, and I'm very scared," the speaker said. Her first thought was that something had happened to one of her children or grandchildren. "I never thought it would be Paul because, you know, I knew he wouldn’t be out and about," she said.
