An NHL player was taken to a hospital Tuesday night after an opponent inadvertently skated over his wrist, leaving him with a deep cut. The injury occurred when Evander Kane, a forward for the Edmonton Oilers, fell to the ice during a game at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, CNN reports. A Tampa Bay Lightning player, Pat Maroon, ran over Kane's wrist with his skate while players were scrambling for a loose puck. Blood quickly pooled on the ice. Kane skated to his team's medical staff, holding his wrist.
His team tweeted an update later, saying, "Evander Kane is stable and has been transported to hospital for a procedure later this evening." The Oilers put him on long-term injured reserve on Wednesday and said he'll be out for three to four months, per Yahoo Entertainment. "Everyone on our team, everyone in our organization … are thinking about Evander Kane," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said after the game, which Edmonton won 3-2. "When an accident like that happens on the ice, that's where our first thought is." Kane posted his own update on Wednesday, thanking doctors and paramedics. He tweeted that he'll be back but said, "It was an extremely scary moment for me and I'm still in a little bit of shock." (More NHL stories.)
