A police officer was killed and five other people were wounded Saturday when a gunman took staff members hostage in the intensive care unit at a Pennsylvania hospital. Police said the gunman was holding an employee at gunpoint when officers arrived and opened fire, ABC News reports. Officials said West York Borough officer Andrew Duarte was killed in the shootout, as was the gunman. Those wounded included a doctor, a nurse, a custodian, and two other police officers, per the AP.
The gunman was identified by officials as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49. He appeared to have targeted the ICU employees after having had contact with the unit earlier in the week for "a medical purpose involving another individual," District Attorney Tim Barker said. Gov. Josh Shapiro, who went to the hospital, described the attack on police and health care workers as "the act of a coward." (More shooting stories.)
