Democrats are so used to losing, writes Roger Simon on Politico, that even the spectacle of what looks very much like a Republican collapse can't keep them from feeling blue. Soaring poll numbers for Barack Obama, a huge war chest, a boom in registered voters—so much good news makes them uncomfortable. “The McCain campaign cannot possibly be as hapless as it looks, party leaders feel," writes Simon.

They worry that the Republicans have an October surprise—"because the Republicans always have an October surprise.” Dems are even fretting about the deeply unpopular GOP robocalls. For the robocalls to work, writes Simon, "the Republicans would need Ayers to plant bombs in key states right now with stickers on them that say: ‘I am Barack Obama, and I endorse this bomb.’”
