Eleven states are choosing governors in a number of tight races today, with both Democrats and Republicans already crowing about victory. The closest contests are in Washington and North Carolina, reports MarketWatch. Neither state has elected a Republican in 20 years, but polls show candidates are neck-and-neck in both states. Three states—Delaware, North Carolina and Missouri—feature new candidates from both parties because incumbents aren't running.
"If we're able to maintain our majority of 28 governors, we'll be very satisfied," said a spokesman for the Democratic Governors Association, who predicted Democrats would hold on to Montana, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Delaware, and wrest Missouri from the GOP "hands-down." But leaders of the Republican association are also confident. "We are well-positioned to see all of our incumbents reelected," said a spokesman. That would include Utah, North Dakota, Indiana and Vermont.
