Bestselling titles like Stephenie Meyer's Twilight and Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass can be downloaded directly to iPhones for the first time, Wired reports. ScrollMotion, a New York app developer, has struck a deal to download e-books from Houghton Mifflin, Simon & Schuster, and other major publishers. Other iPhone e-book apps exist, but only for out-of-copyright titles or without direct downloads.

ScrollMotion offers other perks: It keeps books' original pagination, and allows users to make notes and search through text. The app will likely make iTunes a viable e-bookshop and enable iPhones to compete with other e-book readers, such as Kindle and the Sony E-Reader. (Read more iPhone stories.)
