At least 30 Palestinians were killed and several dozen more wounded today when Israeli tanks shelled a UN-run school in the Gaza Strip, MSNBC reports. Medical officials said those killed were all either local residents, or among the hundreds seeking refuge from the assault in the school. “There’s nowhere safe in Gaza,” said the UN’s top official in Gaza. “Everyone here is terrorized and traumatized.”
UN officials say they gave the coordinates of their buildings to the Israeli army to ensure they weren’t targeted. There are also reports that a Red Crescent ambulance station in the north was hit during the night. “I am appealing to the political leaders here and in the region and the world to get their act together and stop this,” the UN official said. “They are responsible for these deaths.” (More Arab Israeli conflict stories.)
