Herman Rosenblat’s Holocaust memoir was exposed as fake, but that doesn’t mean no one can profit off it: A small New York press is considering publishing the work as fiction, Gawker reports. Rosenblat, who even fooled Oprah a la James Frey, spun a touching but debunked story about meeting his future wife when she threw apples over the fence of the concentration camp where he was incarcerated.
“No deliberate untruth is permissible, but beneath any fabrication is motivation and intent. We believe Mr. Rosenblat’s motivations were very human, understandable and forgivable,” says a statement on the York House Press website. “York House Press is in serious discussion to publish a work of fiction in early spring that is grounded in fact and that rises to the proper levels of artistic value, ethical conduct and social responsibility.”
