Not only is John McCain in town for Barack Obama's inauguration, he's the guest of honor at an event celebrating it, reports the New York Times. In fact, the president-elect has been discreetly consulting his former rival—the one Obama said America can't trust on the Iraq war—on Iraq, foreign policy, and national security appointees (many of whom please the Maverick).

Some senior Dems have felt slighted by their new leader, who has occasionally overlooked their advice, but consistently sought McCain's. "I don't think there is a precedent," said a political science professor. "Sometimes there is bad blood, sometimes there is so-so blood, but rarely is there good blood." Obama's inclination to befriend ideological foes dates back to his days at the Harvard Law Review.
