What Gets Women Hot to Trot?

Nearly one in three women lack sexual desire, and sexologists are trying to help, Daniel Bergner writes in the New York Times. They've hooked up female sex organs to machines and run sexy movies, showing that unlike penises, vulva are excited by a wide range of stimuli—gay men, women, and ape erections included. Which suggests that women need only an emotional bond to get it on.

But one sexologist dismisses such talk as too politically correct. It's narcissism, she says, that fuels female desire: “Being desired is the orgasm. Women want to be thrown up against a wall but not truly endangered." Whether bonding or self-love is what excites women, female Viagra is the loser: Pills can make a woman lubricate, Bergner writes, but her all-important brain remains unaroused.
