House Republicans, fresh from unanimously opposing President Obama’s stimulus package, have proposed their own rescue bill, even as the White House promises retaliation, Politico reports. GOP leaders say their version would cost $478 billion—just over half the Obama price tag—and create 6.2 million jobs, a third more than the Democrats’ version.

The White House, meanwhile, plans to dole out state-by-state job figures “so we can put a number on what folks voted against,” one aide said. Voters, he predicted, “will be stunned to learn their member of Congress voted against creating 3 million jobs.” Counters a GOP aide: “What member can’t go back to his or her district and explain: I voted for an alternative that would create twice the jobs at half the cost?”
