It seems Michelle Obama was using the media to influence household politics when she announced her dog choice, the Los Angeles Times reports. “They have not selected a breed,” her press secretary insists. “Mrs. Obama likes the Portuguese water dog, but she is only one of four votes.” Last month, President Obama narrowed the choices down to that or the labradoodle.
“Their primary focus now is that they get a dog that works with their lifestyle,” the spokeswoman adds. Porties, famously hyper dogs, could prove too much for the first-time—and busy—dog owners. The breed is also tough to find through rescue groups, the family’s preferred route. A Canadian shelter has already offered the Obamas a labradoodle—a Labrador retriever-poodle mix.
