US Agents to Aid Mexican Cartel War

President Obama is shipping agents and equipment to the border to aid Mexico's war on violent drug cartels, the Washington Post reports. His plan, to be unveiled as early as this week, aims to stop the flow of weapons and cash from the US into Mexico. Law enforcement will also increase investigations into cartel activity on the US side. This marks Obama’s first major domestic security move.

Officials are in talks to boost intelligence cooperation with Mexico, which has seen its police force and judicial system crumble amid reforms. "This is what people miss when they analyze Mexico," one analyst said. “Drug trafficking feeds on a country that has a very precarious, if not nonexistent, rule of law." A non-issue during the presidential campaign, drug violence now threatens democratization and US influence in Mexico.
