A North Carolina man had his sperm frozen when he was 16, before leukemia treatment rendered him sterile. A record 22 years later, Chris Biblis and his wife conceived a daughter—and now she’s been born healthy, the Times of London reports. “From my life being saved to being able to create a life, words just can’t describe where we are now,” Biblis said.
The sperm was kept for 22 years in liquid nitrogen. After it thawed, 35% of the cells appeared potent. Doctors injected them into 10 eggs; seven were fertilized and a batch were put into storage in case the family wants more children. “We had every reason to expect a perfect baby but are thrilled nonetheless,” said a doctor. The previous such record was 21 years.
