Pedestrians Drive Cars From Times Square

Times Square was transformed yesterday from a crush of traffic into a pedestrian mall, as New York began a months-long experiment at the city's busiest intersection. Cars have been banned along Broadway from 42nd to 47th streets, as well as in Herald Square to the south. Tourists and locals were thrilled with the change, reports Newsday.

"Usually we are trying to just jump out of the way of cabs," said one theatergoer, strolling up Broadway. But traffic cops had some trouble enforcing the new regulations, and one officer had to keep jumping into the street to stop taxis and pedestrians from colliding. The city's transport commissioner admitted that the transition to a traffic-free Times Square was "a work in progress."
