In the wake of Karl Rove's resignation, the Washington Post  does a detailed account of the political strategist's use of the White House to pursue his dream of insuring GOP dominance for the foreseeable future. While all administrations send senior officials out to help party members get elected, the Post finds that Rove micromanaged these efforts to an unprecedented degree.

Rove led 100 or more briefings with appointees to orchestrate efforts to gain ground in key races. Rove says he was acting legally, but Congress is investigating whether he violated the Hatch Act, which bars government employees from using federal money for election activities. "What we are seeing is the tip of a whole effort to make the federal government a subsidiary of the Republican Party," said one Democractic lawmaker. (More Karl Rove stories.)
