Matthews: GOP Catering to 'Crazies' on Obama's Birth

The Obama-is-not-a-citizen chorus seems to be getting louder of late, thanks in part to a viral video of a woman berating a GOP congressman who defends the president. The theme continued tonight on MSNBC, where Chris Matthews clashed with one of the Republican sponsors of a bill requiring that presidential candidates prove their citizenship, notes the Chicago Tribune. At one point, Matthews presses John Campbell on whether he thinks Obama is a citizen, and Campbell eventually responds, "Yes, I believe so."

"Wouldn't you like to put it to rest?" asks Campbell. "That's what this proposal is all about.'' He defends it as "looking forward" because it applies to 2012 and beyond. Matthews, however, accuses Campbell and the other sponsors in short order of "appeasing the nut-cases," and "playing to the crazies" and "the wacko wing'' of the GOP. He held up a copy of Obama's birth certificate to make his case. (More President Obama stories.)
