The NCAA today stripped the University of Memphis men’s basketball team of 38 victories and various hardware from the 2007-08 season, during which it reached the national championship game, for major violations centering on top recruit Derrick Rose, the Commercial Appeal reports. The infractions came during the coaching tenure of John Calipari, since departed to Kentucky; Memphis says it will appeal.
Memphis’ athletic department was placed on 3 years’ probation; none of the violations specifically involve Calipari, the NCAA says. “I’m very disappointed and disheartened by the NCAA’s findings,” Calipari said on his website. “I fully support the University of Memphis’ appeal.”
