Third- and sixth-grade teachers at the private Sidwell Friends School knew Michelle Obama planned to attend today's scheduled parent-teacher conferences, but they weren't warned to expect her companion: President Obama. The first couple's trip to Sasha's Bethesda, Md., school and Malia's Washington classroom was low-key, for a presidential motorcade—the executive limo traveled without flashing lights and stopped at traffic signals, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

The president then stayed with the elementary-school theme, visiting with third- and fourth-graders in another Maryland suburb. He asked the kids what they were reading, and when one said Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Book Critic in Chief responded, "Sasha and Malia loved that. They think it is hilarious."
