Michigan started the college football season ranked fifth. Now, after embarrassing losses to unranked Appalachian State and Oregon, the Wolverines have plummeted out of the polls, and fans are reacting, USA Today reports. Home-crowd fans booed the Wolverines last weekend, and Detroit columnists are calling for coach Lloyd Carr to resign.

Carr is shrugging off the criticism, telling reporters, "I've been in this job a long time. It does not bother me a bit." But the turmoil is unlikely to let up before this weekend's game against Notre Dame, when freshman Ryan Mallett will start at quarterback in place of injured Chad Henne. (More Michigan stories.)
