The Chicago White Sox have extended Ozzie Guillen's contract through the 2012 season, despite a layer of controversy surrounding the skipper. The man who led the White Sox to a World Series victory in 2005 has seen his team fall to the bottom of the MLB barrel this season, but Chicago GM Kevin Williams remains steadfastly supportive of his manager.

The outspoken Guillen, who courted trouble last year with comments that were perceived as homophobic, chalked his season's poor record up to his staying out of the headlines and being "too soft." The only native Venezuelan major-league manager is prepared for any skuttlebut over his extension, averring he "should be criticized for the way we played this year."
