Insurgents in Baghdad used two children in the backseat of a car to lower suspicion at an American security checkpoint, then blew up the car, with the children in it.  Once they cleared the checkpoint, the bombers parked near a school, ran from the car, and detonated the bomb, killing the children and three other civilians, and wounding seven.

Elsewhere in Iraq, American troops disputed claims by Shiite community leaders that it had stormed two neighborhood mosques, in one of them opening fire on anyone who tried to run. According to the U.S. military, Iraqi soldiers raided one mosque looking for bomb-making apparatus while American soldiers waited outside. After the raid, the American-Iraqi joint force was attacked by about 20 insurgents and returned fire, killing three. (More Iraq stories.)
