Fidel Castro says Cuba helped the US avert an assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in 1984. An essay attributed to the ailing dictator says a Cuban posted to the UN tipped off an American official to the plot, which involved a presidential visit to North Carolina, the Telegraph reports. How Cuba got the information, which Castro called "complete," is unclear.

The essay, which ran yesterday in Granma and was read on state TV, also says Americans were "deliberately misinformed" about the September 11 attack on the Pentagon, which was made by a rocket, not a plane. Castro has not appeared in public in over a year, and rumors have circulated that he's dead. (More Ronald Reagan stories.)
