Boston loaded the bases in the ninth, but Yankees closer Mariano Rivera held on for the save in the Yankees' 4-3 victory. Derek Jeter, who caught the final out, had made all the difference in the previous inning, smashing Curt Schilling's last pitch into the Green Monster seats for a three-run homer, Newsday reports.

Yankees starter Roger Clemens held the Sox to one run in six innings, but the win went to Joba Chamberlain, who also notched his first earned run (a solo homer by Mike Lowell). The win boosted the Yankees to within 4½ games of Boston in the American League East division, and kept them 2½  games over Toronto in the wild-card race. (More MLB stories.)
