An afternoon surge in commodities prices helped the markets overcome a worse-than-expected report on sales of new homes, reports MarketWatch.

  • The Dow gained 2 points to close at 10,466.
  • The Nasdaq rose 17 points to 2,270.
  • The S&P 500 rose 3 points to 1,121.
