With Yemen increasing under scrutiny as a staging ground for terror threats against the US, some analysts think that might not be the best place to send Yemenis the Obama administration wants to get out of the Guantanamo Bay prison. One former US diplomat tells Fox News that Saudi Arabia might be a better alternative, and “more effective than allowing the Yemenis to do what they’ve done in the past, which is to cast a blind eye at the effectiveness of detention.”
“I don’t think there’s anybody we’re going to send back to Yemen who’s going to stay in jail—no one has,” says a former Bush administration, noting men convicted in the 2000 bombing of a US Navy ship in Yemen have either been released by Yemeni authorities or escaped—and that terror suspects repatriated under President Bush are now key al-Qaeda cogs there.
