Gen. Petraeus visited Yemen today and met with the nation's president to discuss how to keep al-Qaeda in check. The meeting came on the same day President Obama spelled out in more detail how the would-be bomber on Christmas Day got his training from al-Qaeda militants based in the cash-strapped Arab nation. Few details emerged from their meeting, but Patraeus delivered a letter from Obama to President Ali Adbdullah Saleh, reports Reuters.

Yemen's state news agency said the military is tightening security along its coastline and has sent reinforcements to eastern provinces where al-Qaeda is known to have strongholds. But officials there have said they will need help to make real progress. Patraeus has previously stated the US is willing to double its current security aid of $70 million.
