The national soccer team of the African nation of Togo was ambushed by gunmen today as it traveled by bus into Angola; the driver was killed and at least two players are among the nine people injured. A separatists group in the enclave of Cabinda claimed responsibility, Reuters reports, noting that the area has been wracked by violence for 30 years.
One player tells CNN “the attack lasted for 10-15 minutes,” during which they tried to find cover on the floor of the bus. The Togolese squad was en route to the African Nations Cup tournament; its first game, against Ghana, is scheduled for Monday, but it’s unclear if it will go on.
