Groin Pulls Griffey Out for The Season
Cincinnati Reds' Ken Griffey Jr., center, walks off the field with assistant trainer Steve Baumann, left, and head trainer Mark Mann after injuring himself fielding a line drive by Chicago Cubs Derrek Lees in the eighth inning of their 3-2 loss at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007....   (Associated Press)

After experiencing intense groin pain while fielding a routine ball against the Cubs, Ken Griffey Jr. is likely out for the season, and his Reds are officially out of playoff contention after the 3-2 loss. The slugger's pursuit of 600 homers—he could be the sixth player in history to achieve the milestone—will have to wait until next year.

With 30 this season, Griffey stands at 593 homeruns. The groin strain may be the most painful of his many injuries over the years. Griffey, 37, fell to the ground as teammates and trainers ran to him shortly after the injury. "Hopefully it's not as bad as it feels," Griffey said. (More baseball stories.)
