Brent Budowsky has caught wind of a movement to draft John Mellencamp to run as Evan Bayh's replacement, and he thinks it's an "inspired idea." The Indiana rocker "would make an outstanding and even brilliant United States senator and represents exactly the spirit and soul the Democratic Party should stand for," writes Budowky at the Hill.

Mellencamp is a champion of "small-town America" in both his music and his actions, and he's worked to improve the lot of farmers and working-class Americans. Budowsky, who once worked for Bayh's father in the Senate, says Mellencamp "is exactly the kind of leader and voice our people need to lift the standards of our politics and the spirit of our nation."
