Violent crimes continued to increase last year, according to FBI statistics released today. Robberies rose by 7.2% and murders by 1.8% from 2005 to 2006. Violent crime climbed overall by 1.9%, exceeding the FBI’s prediction of 1.3%. The increase, the second in two years, marks the first steady rise in violent crime since 1993, the Washington Post reports.

The violent crime rate, which measures crime based on population, rose by about 1%.
However, the number of reported forcible rapes and aggravated assaults dropped, and the overall crime rate—combining violent and property crimes—was the lowest in over 30 years. The FBI report may intensify criticism of the Bush administration for overseeing cuts in federal assistance to local law enforcement agencies. (More FBI stories.)
