The New York Mets saw another game slip beyond their reach as the Nationals hammered young starter Mike Pelfrey and rocked the bullpen for 13 runs last night. It looked like Washington was the team in the heat of a division race and the Mets the ones long since eliminated, said the New York Times.

Pelfrey looked solid at first, but after less than six innings had given up five walks and six runs for the loss, his eighth in a season spent shuttling back and forth from the minor leagues. The Mets will start another rookie pitcher this week as part of a six-man rotation recently thinned by an injury to veteran Orlando Hernandez. (More MLB stories.)
