Jessica Simpson’s new reality show debuted last night, and it put her in a few disgusting situations. In the first episode of VH1’s The Price of Beauty, Simpson attempted to eat a bug in Thailand—because they boost metabolism—and later found herself using a facial cream made out of bird poop. Watch both clips in the gallery, or check out what critics had to say about the show:

  • "The Price of Beauty is not about beauty, not by a long shot. Mostly it's about a celebrity needing something to do," writes Hank Stuever in the Washington Post. "Simpson's naivete about the world beyond her own crosses a line from mildly clueless to patently offensive."
  • Unlike Stuever, Kate Ward thinks Simpson has matured—a bit—since her Newlyweds days. The show is "touching, but we're still privy to Simpson's silly sound bites," Ward writes for Entertainment Weekly. "Says the singer during a Thai massage: 'I hope I don't pass gas.'"
  • "Imagine what kind of movie Legally Blonde would have been if the Reese Witherspoon character, underneath that ditsy blonde facade, had actually been ditsy," writes David Hinckley in the New York Daily News. "That should give you some idea what to expect from The Price of Beauty."
